ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior
Femi John drove the right side of the wing to lay in the game-winner with 19 seconds to play as the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team picked up a 68-66 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at Maryville on Thursday night in the regular season finale.
The Tritons improve to 15-11 overall, including 9-9 in the GLVC and lock up the No. 8 seed in the GLVC Tournament. UMSL will host No. 9 seed Missouri S&T on Sunday at 3 p.m. in a first round game.
Junior
Tylor Wimbish scored a game-high 19 points, netting 8-of-9 field goals. The Tritons shot 51 percent from the field and owned a 26-24 rebounding advantage, while Maryville (13-13, 7-11 GLVC) shot 53.5 percent.
Seniors
Darian Carthan and
Michael Weber each added 14 points on four three-pointers apiece.
UMSL took a 33-30 lead into halftime after a first half which saw neither team lead by more than five and featured six lead changes and three ties.
The Tritons extended their advantage to 41-32 on a Cartharn three-pointer at the 17:56 mark before an 18-6 run over a four minute stretch put the Saints on top 51-47. Maryville later took a 54-48 lead at the 7:53 mark, but from there UMSL ended the game by outscoring the Saints, 20-12.
Senior
Kevin Dwyer converted a traditional three-point play with 3:11 to play to knot it at 62-62, while Wimbish then hit two free throws at the 1:35 mark for a two-point advantage. The Saints answered with two of their own free throws with 1:25 on the clock to make it 64-64, while Cartharn went to the line with just under a minute to play and put UMSL ahead 66-64 with two makes. Maryville's Harrison DuPont connected on the game-tying jumper with 43 seconds remaining before John's heroics. The Saints got off a shot as the clock winded down, but the attempt was short.
John added four steals and five rebounds, while Weber dished out seven assists. The Tritons recorded 19 assists on 25 field goals.
TRITON TIDBITS: UMSL improves to 15-2 all-time against Maryville and completed the season sweep of the Saints, also defeating them on Dec. 7, 74-69, in the GLVC opener… the Tritons snapped a six-game road losing streak, winning away from home for the first time since a 69-67 victory at Illinois Springfield on Jan. 9… the win was career victory No. 140 for head coach
