Baseball Wraps Up Regular Season With Split Against Missouri S&T

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team closed out the regular season on Sunday with a split against Missouri S&T in the finale of a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series. The Miners posted a 6-2 win in the opener, before the Tritons rallied for a 2-1 win in the nightcap with a two-run eighth inning.
 
UMSL closes out the regular season at 25-22, including 21-15 in the GLVC, and will compete in the 2014 GLVC Tournament next Thursday-Sunday in Evansville, Ind. The Tritons will be the No. 5 seed and open tournament action against No. 4 seed Quincy. The Hawks took three of four from the Tritons in St. Louis earlier this season.
 
Missouri S&T ends its season at 20-29, including 14-21 in the GLVC.
 
GAME 1: Missouri S&T 6, UMSL 2 (7-inning game)
Miners' hurler Micah Dolen limited the Tritons to five hits and held UMSL scoreless until a two-run single by senior Cody Garlington with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Garlington led the Tritons with two hits.
 
Junior Ben Klaustermeier suffered his first loss of the season, allowing six runs, including four earned, on eight hits in six innings of work.
 
Missouri S&T scored three runs each in the third and seventh innings.
 
GAME 2: UMSL 2, Missouri S&T 1 (9-inning game)
The Miners jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before a two-out rally in the eighth by the Tritons.
 
With one out, junior pinch hitter Daniel Seddon reached first thanks for a Missouri S&T fielding error. And then with two outs, senior Michael Budka ripped a single up the middle to drive in a run, while senior Cody Garlington, who went 4-for-6 on the day, delivered a single to left field to bring in the go-ahead run.
 
Sophomore Alan Frank picked up the win in one and two-thirds of an innings of relief, allowing just one base runner by way of a walk.
 
Junior Matt Meyer allowed one run on four hits in seven and one-thirds of an inning in the no-decision start, while striking out five.
 
Budka and Garlington had two hits each, while UMSL tallied seven as a team. The Miners were limited to four.
