Baseball Fends Off Elimination in GLVC Tournament With Rally Over Illinois Springfield

EVANSVILLE, IND. – Junior JJ Kinnevan delivered a two-run homerun in the seventh inning to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team avoid elimination with a  4-3 victory over Illinois Springfield on Thursday at the GLVC Tournament. The Tritons were forced to the loser's bracket with a 2-0 loss to Quincy in its opener earlier in the day.
 
No. 5 seed UMSL (26-23) will face the loser of the No. 4 Quincy vs. No. 1 Southern Indiana game at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in another elimination contest.
 
Kinnevan's two-run shot was part of a three-run seventh inning for the Tritons, which rallied from a 3-1 deficit to garner the win over the eighth-seeded Prairie Stars.
 
Senior Joe Wieczkowski's RBI ground out in the second inning scored senior Tyler Bunge for the early 1-0 lead before the Prairie Stars scored twice in the third inning and once in the sixth inning.
 
Bunge then brought UMSL within 3-2 with an RBI single down the right field line before Kinnevan's homerun.
 
The Tritons outhit Illinois Springfield, 9-5, with Bunge, fellow senior Paul Richmond and freshman Jake Beckwith recording two hits each.
 
Senior Jonathan Rosario picked up the win on the mound in eight innings, scattering five hits, while striking out three. Senior Kyle Dermody collected his seventh save of the season.
 
In the loss to Quincy, the Hawks struck in the first inning and added an insurance run in the fourth inning.

Junior Zach Sedlacek the loss on the mound, which snapped his four-game win streak. He scattered seven hits and walked four in the complete game effort.

The Tritons recorded 10 hits as a team, including a 3-for-4 performance from Richmond. Wieczkowski added two hits. However, UMSL left 12 runners on base.
