Box Score ST. LOUIS, MO. – Belllarmine's Josie Metzger scored with less than 10 minutes to play to give the visiting Knights a 1-0 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team on Friday night in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
UMSL slips to 2-1 on the season, including 0-1 in the GLVC, while Belllarmine improves to 3-1 and 1-0 in the league.
The Knights held a 10-9 advantage in shots, including a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Juniors
Sidney Allen and
Laura Hurlbut each recorded two shots for the Tritons.
Hurlbut's second shot of the second period came with six minutes remaining and was on target, but was nicely saved by Knights keeper Hannah Poteet.
The Tritons also had three consecutive shot attempts midway through the second stanza that nearly resulted in a goal. After Hurlbut's header went wide, the ball was sent back out to senior
Brooke Barczewski. She drilled the ball in from nearly 25 yards out and hit the right post before Allen's shot attempt on the rebound went just wide.
Bellarmine held a 5-3 advantage in shots in the first half with the Tritons placing all three attempts on goal, including two in the opening five minutes.
Metzger had the Knight's best offensive attempt in the first 45 minutes with a shot coming from the left wing, which was punched out by Tritons keeper
Megan Ohm.
Ohm played all 90 minutes in goal, registering four saves.
UMSL will close out a four-game season-opening homestand on Sunday, hosting McKendree at 12 p.m.
