ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team played its third overtime game in its last four games, finishing in a 1-1 double overtime tie against visiting Drury Friday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Both teams entered the contest tied in the GLVC standings and left that way with equal 3-2-2 marks. UMSL moves to 4-3-2 overall, while Drury is now 3-4-2 on the year.
The Tritons struck early when junior
Leonardo Rodrigues Sanchez crossed in the long ball from the left side to junior
DJ Bednar who found the back of the net just 3:12 into the game. The lead held until the 71
st minute when Drury scored the equalizer to help force overtime.
UMSL had a pair of near misses late in the second half. Freshman
Dom Barczewski was fouled just outside the box, setting up a free kick for sophomore
Nick Werner, whose shot hit the crossbar. Sanchez picked up the ball and fired it, but it was stopped by Drury keeper Blake Andrews.
The Panthers held a 17-10 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
Werner took a team-high three shots, while senior
Jon Huelsman finished with two. Junior
Jack Filla played all 110 minute in goal, making five saves.
UMSL will close out its weekend homestand on Sunday, hosting Missouri S&T at 2:30 p.m.
