ROLLA, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team saw host Missouri S&T pound out 33 hits and score 24 runs en route to a sweep of the Tritons on Sunday in the start of a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series. The Miners won by scores of 10-5 and 14-1.
UMSL slips to 11-5 overall, including 6-4 in GLVC play, while Missouri S&T improves to 11-10 and 6-4 in the league. The two teams will close out the series with another doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 12 p.m.
GAME 1: Missouri S&T 10, UMSL 5 (9 inning game)Missouri S&T scored nine straight runs over three innings to help garner the win and erase a 4-1 UMSL lead.
The Tritons took an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning on a
Dylan Fieth RBI single to shortstop, which also featured a Miners error that led to a second UMSL run.
Missouri S&T got one run back in the bottom of the first before senior
Daniel Seddon used an RBI groundout in the second to make it 3-1, while sophomore
Chris Mathes drove in a run in the fourth on a groundout.
The Miners then crossed the plate three times in the fourth to tie the game and sent five runners home in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 10-4 lead.
UMSL rounded out the scoring in the seventh with a
Justin Busekrus RBI single.
Missouri S&T recorded 16 hits to UMSL's six, with Busekrus recording two.
Junior
Kyle Wilson suffered the loss on the mound in just two-thirds of an inning of relief work, allowing five runs on five hits.
GAME 2: Missouri S&T 14, UMSL 1 (7 inning game)The Miners tallied 17 hits and scored the game's first 13 runs, including five each in the second and third innings.
UMSL was limited to five hits and scored its lone run in the sixth inning on a sac fly from Busekrus, who also had a single.
Senior
A.J. McElderry took the loss, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits in two and two thirds of an inning in the start.
