COCOA BEACH, FLA. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team opened its 2015 season with a sweep of Findlay on Thursday in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
The Tritons (2-0) return to the field on Sunday in a doubleheader against Northwood.
Game 1: UMSL 7, Findlay 1UMSL recorded nine hits with junior
Jarret Clark going 3-for-3 in his Tritons debut with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs scored, while sophomore
Chris Mathes went 2-for-3 with a double.
Clark was a part of both UMSL runs in the second inning, driving in Mathes before scoring on junior
Dominic Orlando's RBI groundout.
The Oilers got one run back in third, but the Tritons followed with three unanswered, including a two-run homerun from senior
JJ Kinnevan in the third, a two-run single from sophomore
Jake Beckwith in the fourth and a solo homerun from Clark in the fifth.
Senior
Zach Sedlacek picked up the four-hit, one-run victory on the mound, striking out eight to overcome five walks in six innings of work.
Game 2: UMSL 3, Findlay 1Orlando led the offense by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, while Kinnevan added a single and scored two runs. The Tritons tallied just five hits, but were able to capitalize on two Findlay errors.
UMSL jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning as Beckwith led the game off with a single. He later reached third on an Oilers error before scoring on a throw to second with Kinnevan stealing the bag. Kinnevan added the second run on a passed ball.
Findlay got one run back in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a two-out UMSL error, but a second Oilers error in the top of the sixth led to another Tritons run. Kinnevan led off with a single up the middle and then scored all the way from first when sophomore
Dylan Fieth reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt.
Senior
A.J. McElderry picked up the win in five and one-thirds of an inning, scattering three hits and allowing the one unearned run. He also walked two and struck out three, while junior
Austin Simokaitis recorded the save.
