SETTING THE SCENE
UMSL looks to stay in the win column this week when they host Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday in non-conference play before traveling across town to Maryville on Saturday in GLVC play. Thursday's game marks the final home contest of the 2016 calendar year and the first meeting between UMSL and Trevecca as the Tritons make the return trip next Monday (Dec. 19).
LAST TIME OUT
UMSL is coming off a 91-74 win at Missouri S&T last Saturday as the Tritons rebounded from a 69-68 loss at then No. 15 ranked Drury in the GLVC opener last Thursday. Senior Alex Majewksi led six players in double figures with a career-best 17 points as UMSL handed the Miners their first loss of the year. The Tritons shot 64.3 percent in the second half.
SIZING UP THE TRITONS
UMSL is 5-4 overall, including 1-1 in the GLVC. The Tritons are 3-2 at home and 2-2 on the road.
Eight different players have started at least one game, while eight different players have been the top scorer.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Junior
Steven Davis averages a team-best 10.9 points per game with 79.5 percent of his scoring from beyond the three-point line on a team-best 26 three-pointers. That number ranks second in the GLVC and is 31st in NCAA DII. Davis knocked down eight of those three-pointers in a win at Webster (11/21) - coming up one long ball shy of tying the school record. He has made at least one three-pointer in all nine games.
Junior
D.J. White follows with 9.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, and is shooting 51.7 percent from the field. He has scored in double figures in three straight outings.
Senior
Hunter Reine follows with 8.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the GLVC, and is shooting 53.1 percent. Reine has also tallied two double-doubles.
Senior
Joseph English directs the offense and dishes out 3.9 assists per game. He handed out eight assists at Missouri S&T to equal a career-high.
UMSL ranks last in the GLVC in scoring offense with 67.6 points per game, but is third in scoring defense at 68.2 points per game. The Tritons are sixth in the league in rebounding margin (+4.7).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Trevecca Nazarene is 2-6 overall and is 2-2 against other GLVC teams (split with Maryville, lost to Truman State, defeated McKendree). The Trojans have lost their last two, including a 72-64 decision at home to Christian Brothers last Saturday. Devin Whitfield averages 16.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game and is shooting 51.7 percent from the field.
Maryville is 3-8, including 2-2 at home. The Saints snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday night with a 87-49 win over Robert Morris-Springfield. Grant Sims averages 14.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists to pace Maryville.
THE SERIES
UMSL defeated Trevecca Nazarene, 94-91, in overtime last year during the Maryville Tournament in the only meeting between the two programs.
UMSL is 17-4 all-time against Maryville. The two teams split last season, each winning on the other team's floor. The Saints won the first meeting, 68-64, while the Tritons garnered the 81-66 regular season finale victory.
