SETTING THE SCENE
UMSL wraps up the 2016-17 regular season hosting crosstown foe Maryville with a bid to the GLVC Tournament on the line. Win and the Tritons earn the final spot in the league's annual postseason affair. With a loss, UMSL would also need William Jewell to lose to Rockhurst. The GLVC Tournament begins on Sunday with first round games at four host sites. The top four seeds earn a bye to the quarterfinals, while seeds 5-8 will host seeds 9-12. Quarterfinal play then begins on Thursday, March 2 in Evansville, Ind.
UMSL's postseason fate last season also came down to its final game and the Tritons were able to prevail at Maryville with an 81-66 win.
LAST TIME OUT
UMSL lost both of its games last weekend by a combined five points. The Tritons saw Missouri S&T erase a 17-point deficit en route to snagging a 69-66 win, while Drury rallied back from eight down with 45 seconds to play to win in overtime, 81-79.
CLOSE GAMES
UMSL has had 10 games decided by four points or less this season. The Tritons are 3-7 in those contests.
SIZING UP THE TRITONS
The Tritons are 10-17 overall, including 4-13 in the GLVC... UMSL has lost five straight and eight of its last nine... the Tritons are 5-9 at home, including just 1-7 in the GLVC... 12 different players have started at least one game, while nine different players have been the top scorer.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Senior
Hunter Reine leads the Tritons with 11.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game and is shooting 59.3 percent from the field, which ranks seventh on the single season charts. He has 10 double-doubles, including four straight, and has pulled down double digit rebounds 12 times, including in seven of the last nine games.
In his career, Reine is shooting at a 58.4 percent clip from the floor, which ranks third all-time.
Junior
Steven Davis follows with 11.0 points per game. 80 percent of Davis' scoring comes from beyond the three-point line on a team-best 80 three-pointers, the third most in an UMSL single season. Davis needs four three-pointers to move into a tie for second place, while the single season mark of 89 was set last season by
Brandon Marquardt.
He has made at least one three-pointer in all but three games and has 11 games of four or more long balls, including two games of eight three-pointers (at Webster and vs. Truman State), one shy of the program single game record.
Junior
Elijah Watson adds 10.4 points and 3.6 assists per game.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Maryville is 9-20 overall, including 3-14 in the GLVC and 2-8 on the road. The Saints have four players averaging double figures, including Forrester Sims' 13.1 points per game. In GLVC-only games, Maryville is fourth in three-point shooting percentage at 39.9.
THE SERIES/EARLIER THIS SEASON
UMSL is 18-4 all-time against Maryville, which includes a 66-62 win on the Saints' homecourt on December 10. Senior
Joseph English scored his only two points off the day with the eventual game-winner on a lay in following an offensive rebound for a 63-62 lead with 1:19 to play. Maryville then missed shots on two following possessions and turned the ball over under their own basket with 1.9 seconds on the clock, trailing 65-62, following a pair of free throws from junior
Elijah Watson. Watson finished with 18 points, while junior
D.J. White added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The two teams split last season, each winning on the other team's floor. The Saints won the first meeting, 68-64, while the Tritons garnered the 81-66 regular season finale victory.
