Men's Basketball Travels to UIndy to Begin GLVC Tournament Action

SETTING THE SCENE
UMSL travels to Indianapolis, Ind., on Sunday to begin GLVC Tournament play. The Tritons, seeded No. 12, will face the No. 5 seed Indianapolis with the winner advancing to the tournament quarterfinals on Thursday, March 2 in Evansville, Ind. UMSL locked up its tournament bid by defeating Maryville, 68-48, Thursday night in the regular season finale.
 
UIndy defeated the Tritons, 64-57, in St. Louis on January 5 during the regular season.
 
UMSL IN THE GLVC TOURNAMENT
The Tritons are 3-11 all-time in GLVC Tournament games... UMSL lost at Truman State last year in its first round game, which snapped a streak of two straight first round game victories... the Tritons have appeared in three quarterfinal round games since the field expanded to 12 teams from eight in 2009-10... UMSL and UIndy are meeting for the second time in the GLVC Tournament with the Greyhounds winning 74-63 in 2013 in Indianapolis.
 
THE REST OF THE FIELD
Bellarmine earned the top seed overall and are joined by No. 2 seed Quincy, No. 3 Southern Indiana and No. 4 Wisconsin-Parkside in Evansville and await their opponents from Sunday's first-round games. The other first round contests include No. 6 Truman State hosting No. 11 Missouri S&T, No. 7 Lewis hosting No. 10 Saint Joseph's and No. 8 Drury hosting No. 9 Rockhurst. Following Sunday's four first-round contests, the winners will be reseeded Nos. 5-8 and placed against the tournament's top four seeds.
 
EARLIER THIS SEASON VS. THE GREYHOUNDS
Indianapolis ended the game on a 14-4 run to steal the 64-57 victory. UMSL scored just one point in the final four minutes and knocked down its last field goal with 7:24 to play – a layup by senior Hunter Reine for a 53-45 lead. But from there, the Tritons missed eight shots and turned the ball over four times, including on three straight possessions.
 
Junior Elijah Watson led the offense with 16 points, going 10-of-15 at the free throw line, and added six rebounds.
 
UMSL shot 31.5 percent, including just 28.6 percent in the second half, and held a 40-37 rebounding advantage, including a 13-8 edge on the offensive end.
 
SIZING UP THE TRITONS
The Tritons finished the regular season with an 11-17 record, including a 5-13 mark in GLVC play... UMSL snapped a five-game losing streak with its regular season finale victory over Maryville... the Tritons have had 10 games decided by four points or less this season and are 3-7 in those contests... UMSL is 5-8 in road games... 12 different players have started at least one game, while nine different players have been the top scorer... junior Steven Davis is tied for second on the single season charts with 84 three-pointers, needing five to tie the record.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Indianapolis is 15-11 overall, but has lost its last two. The Greyhounds finished 12-6 in the GLVC and are 8-3 at home. They average a GLVC-best 7.73 steals per game and are fifth with 9.35 three-pointers per game. Eric Davidson averages 15.2 points per game, while Jesse Kempson adds 14.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Indianapolis leads the all-time series, 21-6, and has won seven straight and 10 of the last 11.
