SETTING THE SCENE
The UMSL men's basketball team looks to stay in the win column on Saturday when the Tritons return home to host crosstown foe Maryville at 3 p.m. in their lone game of the week.
SIZING UP THE TRITONS
- UMSL improved to 14-4 overall with two come from behind wins last weekend, battling back from a nine down at the half at Truman State en route to a 61-58 win and from 10 down at Quincy in an 83-74 victory.
- The Tritons are 5-3 in the GLVC and sit in sixth place, but are third in the GLVC Point Rating System, used to determine the field for the eight-team league tournament in March.
- UMSL is 9-3 at home, with two of those losses coming to Top 25 ranked opponents (No. 25 Missouri Southern and No. 1 Bellarmine).
- The Tritons last four wins have come by an average of 7.25 points per game.
- UMSL has outrebounded three of its last four opponents by an average of 12 boards.
- UMSL is shooting 48.7 percent from the field, which ranks 35th in NCA DII.
- In GLVC play, senior Johnathan Matthews is averaging 16.5 points per game, having reached double figures in each of those eight games. He is shooting 52.3 percent from the field, including 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from three-point range.
- Redshirt junior Jason Towery adds 9.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per GLVC game, while senior Eric Dust follows with 8.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
- Matthews ranks 18th in NCAA DII in free throw percentage (90.1).
WITH A WIN ON SATURDAY…
- UMSL would pick up its 15th victory, surpassing last year's season total of 14 wins with nine games to play.
- The Tritons would improve to 15-4 overall for just the fourth time in program history and the first since the 1990-91 season.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Maryville is 7-10 overall, including 2-6 in the GLVC. The Saints are tied for 12
th in the league standings and are also 12
th in the GLVC Point Rating System. Maryville is 2-3 in road games. The Saints have two average double figures, including Casey Teson, whose 20.0 points per GLVC game is fourth in the league.
SERIES HISTORY
UMSL is 19-6 all-time against Maryville despite dropping both contests last season, including a 70-69 decision at home and a 79-70 verdict on the road.
