Freeman Recognized as James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Honoree

INDIANAPOLIS – University of Missouri-St. Louis senior outfielder Derrick Freeman has been recognized by the Great Lakes Valley Conference in the sport of baseball as an honoree of the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award. Freeman is one of 16 student-athletes honored, with one coming from each league institution.
 
The representatives were chosen by their respective coaches to have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior this season.
 
These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
 
Freeman spent five seasons at UMSL, playing in 146 career games. He recorded 135 hit, including 25 doubles, 10 triples and 12 home runs, while scoring 112 runs and driving in 86.
 
Freeman and his fellow honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two overall James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced on Monday, May 18.
