PREVIEW | Men's Basketball With One Road and Two Home Games This Week

OPENING TIP NOTES
  • UMSL (9-2 overall and in the GLVC) will play three games this week, beginning Tuesday when they make the short trip across town to face Maryville at 7:30 p.m.
  • The Tritons then return to the Mark Twain Building on Thursday to host William Jewell at 7:30 p.m. and close out the week by entertaining Rockhurst at 3:30 p.m.
  • UMSL enters the week on a six-game win streak and are coming off a 78-72 win at Quincy last Thursday. The six-game win streak is the longest active in the GLVC.
  • The Tritons are 4-0 on the road and 5-2 at home.
 
UMSL-MARYVILLE CONNECTION
Tuesday's game at Maryville will be a reunion of sorts as former Tritons assistant coach Jesse Shaw is now the head coach of the Saints, while one of Shaw's assistants is Steve Tappmeyer, former head coach at UMSL.
 
GLVC STANDINGS
  • UMSL is second in the GLVC Point Rating System, used to determine the league's postseason tournament, trailing only Truman State by .05 points.
  • Maryville is tied for eighth with Rockhurst, while William Jewell is 15th.
 
SCOUTING UMSL
  • UMSL leads the GLVC in scoring defense, surrendering just 66.9 points per game, while its three-point field goal percentage defense (.287) is also first in the league.
  • The Tritons are also first in the conference in free throw shooting percentage (80.1) and is second in assist-turnover ratio (1.41).
 
SIZING UP THE TRITONS
  • Junior Marty Jackson has led the team in scoring average (13.2 ppg) all season and is one of three players in double figures along with seniors Jose Grubbs (11.1 ppg) and Shane Wissink (10.5 ppg).
  • Redshirt junior Steve Webb is averaging team-bests of 5.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
  • Wissink leads the team with 22 three-pointers made, while redshirt freshman Lawrence Brazil III is shooting 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from long range.
 
SCOUTING MARYVILLE
  • Maryville is 5-7, but does have a 90-83 win over then No. 7 ranked Truman State.
  • The Saints are 2-4 at home.
  • Owen Long is second in the GLVC in scoring (21.5 ppg).
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • UMSL is 21-6 all-time against Maryville and has won the last three meetings, including an 83-58 win at home last season.
  • The Tritons won the last meeting at Maryville, 77-69, during the 2018-19 season.
 
SCOUTING WILLIAM JEWELL
  • The Cardinals are 2-6, but are coming off an 81-78 win over Lindenwood last Saturday.
  • William Jewell is 1-6 on the road, having defeated Indianapolis in the season opener.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • UMSL is 15-7 all-time against William Jewell and has won four straight, including a 65-52 decision in Liberty, Mo., on Jan. 3. The Tritons limited the Cardinals to 17 points and 23.8 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes and finished with a season-high 13 steals. Redshirt junior Steve Webb recorded 18 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and four assists.
 
SCOUTING ROCKHURST
  • Rockhurst is 6-6 overall and will play at Lindenwood on Thursday before Saturday's game.
  • The Hawks are 2-3 on the road.
  • Rockhurst has won its last two games, defeating William Jewell and Maryville last week.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • UMS is 24-21 all-time against Rockhurst and has won the last four meetings, three of which have been at home.
  • The Tritons also earned an 82-77 victory over the Hawks in Kansas City on Dec. 12. Senior Shane Wissink led five players in double figures with a season-high 19 points. UMSL led by 20 in that game, but saw Rockhurst pull within two with 90 seconds to play.
