Mary Kate Neal made four saves to pick up her second shutout on Thursday

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team snapped its two-game skid with a 1-0 win over Maryville in the first leg of the St. Louis Derby on Thursday afternoon at the Maryville Soccer Field. The Tritons improve to 2-2 while the Saints drop to 2-2.

UMSL had the game’s first scoring chance in the ninth minute but Jaycee Cotton was turned away by Katie Nash.

Maryville had three chances in the 11th minute but the Triton defense blocked two shots and Mary Kate Neal made a save on the third attempt to keep the Saints off the board.

UMSL had another chance in the 22nd minute but Cotton’s attempt was wide.

The Tritons broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. Kennedi Hooks crossed a ball from the right wing into the box looking for Kendal White but it hit off a defender and deflected past Nash for Hooks first career collegiate goal.

UMSL had two more chances later in the half to extend its lead but Mia Milazzo had a shot saved in the 37th minute by Nash and then shortly before halftime Kendyll Feiste missed a shot wide.

The Tritons outshot the Saints 7-5 in the first 45 minutes including 3-1 in shots on goal.

UMSL had three excellent chances to extend its lead early in the second stanza but Ayana Weissenfluh missed a shot wide, Cotton missed one over the bar and Weissenfluh missed a second shot wide to the left.

The Triton defense came big over the final 30 minutes to preserve the clean sheet. Neal made a great diving stop in the 61st minute and then with less than 10 minutes to play she robbed Gina Catanzaro tipping one over the bar.

UMSL’s back line also blocked three shots in the final 30 minutes including one with 0:14 remaining.

The Saints outshot the Tritons 9-5 in the final 45 minutes to finish the contest with a 14-12 edge in shots but each team had four shots on goal. Neal made four saves in goal to pick up her second career shutout.

The Tritons return to the pitch this Sunday (Sept. 11) as they head north to Romeoville, Ill., to take on Lewis in the GLVC opener for both teams at 12 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
