ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball hosts William Jewell and Rockhurst this weekend to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Tritons and Cardinals play on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while Saturday's game against the Hawks will tip off at 2 p.m.
Due to UMSL's fourth ranked volleyball team hosting the NCAA Midwest Regional, Thursday's game between UMSL and William Jewell be played on the campus of Missouri Baptist at the Petty Sports and Recreation Complex. Saturday's game will be played at the Mark Twain Building.
The Tritons went 1-1 last week defeating Parkside 62-57 to snap a two-game losing streak before falling to No. 17 Northwest Missouri State 71-41 in Maryville's Thanksgiving Classic.
Emanuel Prospere II led the team in scoring last week averaging 11.5 points per game while
Matt Enright and
Terrell Kabala added 10.5 and 10 points per outing respectively.
Mayson Quartlebaum was the team's leader in rebounds with 6.5 per contest. Prospere II, Enright and Kabala were tied with six assists each.
For the season UMSL is averaging 65.2 points per game while allowing 72.2 points per contest and is shooting 47 percent (144-for-308) from the field but just 24 percent from beyond the arc and is shooting 77 percent at the charity stripe. It is outrebounding its opposition by nearly a rebound per game.
Enright leads the Tritons in scoring with 15.5 points per game while Prospere II is contributing 11.7 points per contest and Quartlebaum is averaging 10 points per outing. Enright is the team's leading rebounder at 5.3 per game and has dished out a team-high 23 assists.
About William Jewell – The Cardinals enter Thursday's game with a record of 5-1 and are coming off an 85-72 win at Pittsburg State on Saturday. WJC had five players reach double figures in scoring and were led by Justice Sutton and Grant Stubbs with 17 points each while Jordan Jermain added 16 points and Eli Wingert finished with 15 points.
As a team the Cardinals are averaging 83.5 points per game while giving up just 71.3 per contest. They're shooting over 50 percent from the field including 42 percent from three and 78 percent at the foul line. They're being outrebounded by their opponents by more than three rebounds per game.
Jermain and Kobe McKinley lead William Jewell in scoring with 19.5 and 19.2 points per game respectively while Stubbs is contributing 13.2 points per outing and Trey Shannon and Wingert are chipping in with 9.8 and 9.5 points per contest apiece. Jermain and Stubbs are the team's leading rebounders with 5.7 and 5.5 per game. Jermain also has a team-high 22 assists.
About Rockhurst – The Hawks enter Thursday's conference opener at McKendree with a record of 3-3 but have won back-to-back games to get back to .500. They beat Missouri Southern 75-57 last Saturday in Joplin and then defeated Avila 96-58 on Monday evening.
Rockhurst is averaging nearly 77 points per contest while giving up close to 72 points per game. It is shooting 45 percent from the field including 41.5 percent from three and 71 percent at the foul line. It's outrebounding its opposition by more than one rebound per outing.
Timaris Brown leads the Hawks in scoring with 13.8 points per game while Miles White is dropping home 12.3 per contest and Davit Kakushadze, Nick Arensberg and Brian Hawthorne are all averaging over nine points per outing. Brown leads the team in rebounding at 6.2 per game while Hawthorne has a team-best 22 assists and 10 steals.
