ST. LOUIS – After a four-game homestand to begin the season the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team heads out on the road for the first time this weekend as it opens Great Lakes Valley Conference action with games at William Jewell and Rockhurst. The Tritons play the Cardinals on Friday at 5 p.m. and against the Hawks at noon on Sunday.
Last Time Out – UMSL (1-1-2) dropped a hard-fought game to Cedarville 2-1 last Saturday with all three goals in the contest being scored in a span of seven minutes. The Yellow Jackets struck first with a goal in the 63rd minute but the Tritons evened the scored five minutes later as
Emily Bloomfield converted a penalty kick after
Kendal White was fouled in the penalty area. Cedarville retook the lead two minutes later as Tiffany Campbell scored the game-winner.
GLVC Statistical Rankings – Through the first four contests, UMSL is one of the top scoring teams in the GLVC having scored six goals for an average of 1.5 per contest. The Tritons are fourth in the conference in points per game with an average of 4.75 per outing. They've tallied 19 total points with six goals and seven assists.
Jaycee Cotton is seventh in the league in goals scored with two while
Taylor Martin is sixth in the league with her two assists.
Rylee Griffith and
Mary Kate Neal both rank in the top 10 in the conference in goals against average. Griffith is fifth at 1.00 while Neal is ninth at 1.50.
About William Jewell – The Cardinals enter Friday's contest with a record of 0-3 on the young season and have been outscored 7-0 to start the year. In their last outing on Sunday they fell to Missouri Western 2-0. WJC has only attempted 13 shots in its first three games but have put 10 of those on goal. Kim Munoz, Brylee Rivera and Lux Sands lead the team with three shots apiece. Jenna Skeeters has started all three contests and played a majority of the minutes in goal and has a goals against average of 2.11 and has made 20 saves with a save percentage of .769.
About Rockhurst – The Hawks enter Friday's match against No. 13 McKendree with a record of 2-1-1 and are coming off a 1-0 loss to Oklahoma Christian this past Sunday. Rockhurst has scored five goals through its first four games while conceding three. Anna Lantz and Gabby Hennessy lead the team in scoring with five and four points respectively. Lantz has scored two goals and added an assist while Hennessy has a pair of goals. They've each scored a game-winner. Taylor James has played every minute in goal this and is 2-1-1 with a goals against average of 0.75, has a save percentage of .667 and has posted two shutouts.
Series History – Friday's contest marks the 13th meeting all-time between the Tritons and Cardinals with UMSL holding a 7-4-1 advantage and has won four straight. Last season the Tritons defeated the Cardinals 3-1 on the strength of goals from
Candice Parziani,
Chelsea Riden and
Grace Osvath.
Sunday's contest against Rockhurst is the 22nd meeting in the series dating back to 2005. The Hawks hold a 10-7-4 edge in the series. The two sides met twice last season with Rockhurst winning the regular season matchup 2-1 on Sept. 30 but a month later UMSL upset the top seeded Hawks 2-1 in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. The Tritons got first half goals from
Maya Ware and Parziani to take a 2-0 lead into the break and then held off the Hawks in the second half.
Up Next – UMSL concludes its three-game road trip as it travels across the river next Sunday to take on No. 13 McKendree in Lebanon, Ill., at noon.
