Former UMSL Men’s Basketball Standout Jonathan Griffin to Receive “Filbert Five” Award

ST. LOUIS – Former University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball standout and UMSL Sports Hall of Fame member Jonathan Griffin will be recognized by the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame as a recipient of a Filbert Five Award, given to people "who made significant contributions in the sport of basketball at the high school, collegiate and/or professional level," according to a news release by the Hall of Fame.

This year's Filbert Five Award winners will be honored at the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremony on Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis.

The award is named in honor of Gary Filbert who was a successful basketball coach before assisting legendary Missouri Tigers coach Norm Stewart and then founding the Show-Me State Games.

Griffin, a 2001 graduate of Normandy High School, averaged 11.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists on a team that twice won the Suburban North Conference and district tournament. He earned All-State honors in addition to all-conference playing for coach Malcolm Hill.

At UMSL, Griffin is in the top 10 in all statistical categories. That includes being the No. 2 scorer all-time, with 1,739 points, and ranking second in made free throws and free-throw attempts. Playing for coach Chris Pilz, he was a two-time All-Great Lakes Valley Conference and All-Region selection and helped the 2005 team to the GLVC Tournament.

Griffin was inducted into the UMSL Sports Hall of Fame in February 2024. He is the principal at Carnahan STEAM Middle School.
