ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer team hosts Newman in its home opener this Thursday (Sept. 12) at 5 p.m. at Don Dallas Field. After Thursday's match the Tritons begin a three-game road trip on Sunday at Drury for the conference opener for both teams.
UMSL opened its season with back-to-back wins at Washburn last weekend. The Tritons opened the season with a 2-0 win over the then second ranked Ichabods, the national runners-up last season,getting goals from
Jada Holloman and
Jaycee Cotton.
UMSL scored the first goal in its game against Northwest Missouri State on Saturday with
Julie Steiger scoring her first collegiate goal in the first half but the Bearcats countered with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. The Tritons tied and retook the lead as Holloman scored twice in the span of a minute early in the second half and UMSL held on to complete the weekend sweep.
The Tritons put 13 of their 20 shots on goal this weekend and scored on five of those attempts with two of those goals coming from near midfield.
INCYMI – Holloman was named the GLVC's Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career on Monday afternoon. The senior forward was efficient tallying three goals on five shots and finished the weekend with six points and two game-winners.
About Newman – The Jets enter Thursday's contest with a record of 0-1-1. They opened their season last Thursday with a 2-0 loss at William Jewell then rebounded with a 2-2 draw in their home opener against Southwest Baptist on Saturday.
Lexi Bauer and Marta Aranda each had a goal against the Bearcats on Saturday. Delphine Sosu led the team with four shots landing on three on goal in the first two contests.
About Drury – The Panthers enter Friday's non-conference contest against Maryville with a record of 2-0 after posting back-to-back shutouts last weekend defeating Northern State 3-0 and Bemidji State 1-0 in Bemidji, Minn.
Holland Hawkins leads Drury in scoring with two goals while Tara Simon and Kourtney Tucker have a goal apiece. Simon had the game-winning goal against Bemidji State. Katy Fitzler stopped all six shots she faced in the back-to-back shutouts.
Up Next – UMSL continues its three-game road trip traveling to Bolivar, Mo., next Friday (Sept. 20) to take on Southwest Baptist at 4 p.m.
