UMSL Athletics Names Frank May as Strength and Conditioning Coach

ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri–St. Louis Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of Frank May as its new Strength and Conditioning Coach.

May brings a diverse and extensive background in strength and conditioning, exercise physiology, and program development. He holds a Bachelor of Health Science from the University of Missouri and a Master of Education in Athletic & Activities Administration from William Woods University. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds additional certifications in nutrition coaching, CPR/AED, and specialized training methodologies.

Most recently, May has served as a Performance Coach and Program Director at Perform Fitness (Parisi Speed School STL), where he implemented structured performance training systems and evaluated athletes using evidence-based screening tools to enhance performance and reduce injury risk. He also worked as a personal trainer at the Center of Clayton, designing individualized and remote training programs while contributing to community health and fitness initiatives.

Prior to these roles, May spent nearly six years as an Exercise Physiologist with the MU Human Performance Program, where he developed specialized training protocols for individuals ranging from general population clients to high-level athletes. In that role, he collaborated with healthcare professionals, contributed to program development initiatives, and helped lead educational and operational efforts within the facility.

Throughout his career, May has demonstrated a strong commitment to holistic athlete development, emphasizing injury prevention, performance optimization, and long-term health and wellness. His experience includes designing individualized training programs, implementing data-driven performance systems, and contributing to interdisciplinary wellness initiatives.

"We are excited to welcome Frank to the Triton family," said Dr. Holly Sheilley, Executive Director of Athletics. "His depth of experience in strength and conditioning, combined with his ability to integrate performance training with overall health and wellness, makes him an outstanding addition to our department. Frank's approach aligns with our commitment to providing a comprehensive, student-athlete centered experience."

In his role, May will oversee strength and conditioning programming for UMSL's athletic teams, working closely with coaches and sports medicine staff to enhance performance and support student-athlete well-being.
