Men's Basketball Upsets No. 4 Bellarmine in Double OT, 87-82

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior Joshua McCoy scored 28 points, including a stretch of 16 straight, to help the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team to an 87-82 double overtime win over No. 4 ranked Bellarmine Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
 
The Tritons trailed 50-35 with 11:56 to play in regulation before a 25-10 run by UMSL knotted the score at 60-60 with 3:26 remaining on a McCoy three-pointer. McCoy would then score the Tritons' next eight points to force the first overtime.
 
McCoy continued his hot streak as the overtime began, scoring five straight to give UMSL a 73-69 lead. Bellarmine then scored six unanswered to take a 76-73 lead with 1:36 to play. Senior Isiah Nunn converted a three-point scoring play with 29 seconds remaining to knot the score, sending it to a second overtime.
 
UMSL led from start to finish in the final five minutes of extra play, outscoring Bellarmine 11-6.
 
Senior Darian Carthan added 19 points for the Tritons, including five in the second overtime, while Nunn finished with 17 points. Junior Michael Weber chipped in 10 points.    
 
UMSL improves to 8-4 overall, while picking up its first GLVC win, improving to 1-3 in the league. Bellarmine slips to 10-1 and 2-1 in the conference.
 
The Tritons finished the game shooting 43.8 percent from the field and owned a 40-27 rebounding advantage, including a 16-6 edge on the offensive end. Bellarmine shot 54.5 percent from the field.
 
A 13-7 run by Bellarmine in the final 4:42 of the first half sent the Knights into halftime with a 35-29 lead.
 
McCoy also finished with seven rebounds, six assists and four steals, while going 9-for-9 at the free throw line.
 
UMSL returns to action on Saturday, hosting the GLVC's newest member, McKendree, in a 3:15 p.m. contest.
 
TRITON TIDBITS: UMSL is 1-2 this season in overtime games… UMSL improves to 11-17 all-time against Bellarmine… this was the sixth overtime game in the series, with five of those coming since 2000, including tonight… this meeting pitted the GLVC's two division preseason favorites as UMSL was picked to win the West Division and Bellarmine was tabbed to win the East Division… after attempting just one free throw in the first half, the Tritons finished the game 23-of-27 at the line (85.2 percent)… McCoy tied a career-high 28 points, equaling his 28-point effort against Arkansas Tech earlier this season.
