Men's Basketball Begins Three-Game Homestand Thursday Hosting Missouri S&T


THIS WEEK IN UMSL MEN'S BASKETBALL
The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's basketball team begins a three-game homestand on Thursday when it hosts Missouri S&T. The Tritons close out the week by hosting Drury on Saturday.

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW
UMSL overcame a slow start last Thursday to record a 73-65 win at Rockhurst, but lost a 79-71 decision at William Jewell on Saturday as a late rally came up short, dropping the Tritons to 10-5 overall, including 3-4 in the GLVC.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Missouri S&T snapped a five-game losing streak last Saturday when it posted a 69-60 home victory over Illinois-Springfield. It was the first GLVC win for the Miners, who improved to 5-9 overall, including 1-6 in the league. Mudi Eruteya paces Missouri S&T with 13.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

Drury enters a Thursday game at Maryville with an 11-4 record, including a 5-2 mark in the GLVC. The Panthers lead the GLVC in scoring offense (82.5 ppg) and are outscoring their opponents by an average of 17.1 points per game. Alex Hall averages 17.0 points per game and is shooting 44.4 percent (48-of-108) from three-point range.

THE SERIES
UMSL holds a 32-24 lead in the series with Missouri S&T. The two teams split last year's series with the Tritons posting a 79-70 victory in Rolla, while the Miners handed UMSL its only home loss last season, 83-79, in overtime.

Drury leads the all-time series, 13-7. UMSL won all three meetings last season, including a  71-60 victory in the GLVC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Tritons also won at home, 82-71 in overtime, and began the GLVC season with a 78-61 win in Springfield, Mo.

SIZING UP THE TRITONS
Senior Joshua McCoy paces the squad with averages of 16.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Junior Darian Cartharn (13.7 ppg) and senior Charlie Woods (10.3 ppg) also average double figures.

LEADING THE NATION AT THE LINE
The Tritons entered the week leading the NCAA Division II in free throw shooting percentage, connecting at an 80.4 percent clip.

UMSL's top shooter from the charity stripe is junior Michael Weber (52-of-55) at 94.5 percent, who ranks second nationally.

MORE ON THE FREEBIE SUCCESS
UMSL leads the GLVC in total free throws made (305) and is second in attempts (378), averaging 25.2 attempts per game.  

Senior Charlie Woods tied an UMSL single game free throw percentage record by netting 10-of-10 free throws in a home win over Lincoln on December 1, while junior Michael Weber also tied the school's single game mark by connecting on all 11 attempts at the free throw line in last Saturday's loss at Kentucky Wesleyan.

THE REAL MCCOY
Senior Joshua McCoy is averaging 15.2 points per game during his two-year career at UMSL, having scored 637 career points, which ranks 41st on the Top 50 list. He has 87 three-pointers and is shooting 39.2 percent from beyond the arc, which currently ranks fourth on the career charts. Additionally, McCoy is shooting 84.6 percent (154-of-182) from the free throw line, which ranks second all-time.

WOODS' BLOCK PARTY
Senior Charlie Woods has 49 career blocks, which ranks seventh on the career charts. He tallied 31 swats last season, which tied the sixth best single season effort.

Woods leads the team with 18 blocks this season.

TRITON TIDBITS
- Senior Isiah Nunn ranks third in the GLVC in field goal percentage (.617).
- Senior Charlie Woods had a streak of 32 consecutive free throws end on Thursday night at Rockhurst when he missed his first attempt at the line.
- UMSL is 1-2 in overtime games this season with its win coming in a double overtime victory against Bellarmine on January 10. The Tritons also played in the GLVC's last double OT game, posting a 72-61 win at Maryville on February 17, 2011.
- The Tritons tied a school-record with 15 three-pointers in a 90-76 win over Central Oklahoma on November 24.
- UMSL scored 90 or more points in three of its first five games and has hit the 90-point mark in four games.
- Senior Charlie Woods was named the GLVC Men's Basketball Player of the Week on November 12.

HOME SWEET HOME
UMSL owns a 337-204 (.623) record in its home facility - the Mark Twain Building. The arena opened in the fall of 1971 and during the 1971-72 season, the Tritons posted a 13-0 record on their new home court. UMSL posted a 12-1 on its home floor last season and is off to a 7-1 start this season.
