Women's Basketball Rallies, But Suffers Through Scoring Drought in Loss to Quincy

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team used a 16-5 run to open the second half, but then endured a nearly nine minute scoring drought as the Tritons suffered a 47-42 loss to Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division leader Quincy on Thursday night.
 
After senior Devonna Smith capped the run on her own offensive putback with 10:41 to play that gave UMSL a 36-34 lead, the Tritons would not score again until freshman Kelly Kunkel netted a three-pointer with 1:52 to play that pulled UMSL within 40-39.
 
Quincy's Felicia Loggins then followed with a jumper before the Hawks closed out the game by going 5-of-6 at the free throw line.
 
UMSL slips to 10-8 overall with the loss, including 5-5 in the GLVC, while Quincy improves to 10-8, including 8-2 in the league.
 
Smith led the Tritons with 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Kunkel posted a career-best nine points to go with five rebounds – all on the offensive end.
 
UMSL finished the game shooting 27.6 percent, while Quincy shot at 32.6 percent clip, including just 15 percent (3-of-20) in the second half, and owned a 43-34 rebounding advantage.
 
The Hawks used a 20-6 run during a 10 minute stretch in the first half to help take a 29-20 lead into halftime. The Hawks took their largest lead at 29-16 with 2:01 to play before the Tritons scored the final four points of the stanza. Quincy's Lucy Cramsey scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the first half.
 
Sophomore Kelly McGovern dished out six assists, while senior Angela Johnson collected four steals.
 
UMSL returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Illinois-Springfield at 1 p.m. in the start of a three-game roadswing.
