ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team rode a pair of career-highs from junior
Alexis Lawrence and senior
Hazaria Washington en route to an 87-33 victory over Culver-Stockton on Wednesday night.
Lawrence poured in a career-best 27 points, connecting on 10-of-13 field goals, including 7-of-9 from three-point range, and added five assists, while Washington tied a careeer-best 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Washington also collected a career-best seven steals to go with seven rebounds and four assists.
UMSL improves to 6-1 with its fifth straight victory, while Culver-Stockton dips to 3-8. The Tritons will wrap non-conference action this weekend at the Fairfield Inn Christmas Classic, hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan. The Tritons will play the host Panthers on Saturday night before a Sunday contest with Davis & Elkins.
The Tritons netted their first seven field goals, including four from Lawrence, to take an early 19-3 lead. Lawrence scored UMSL's first seven points and 10 of the first 12. The Tritons shot 75 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes to take a 52-22 lead into halftime and finished the game shooting 60 percent.
UMSL owned a 37-26 rebounding advantage, including a 16-9 edge on the offensive end, and outscored the Wildcats, 14-6, in second chance points. The Tritons also forced Culver-Stockton into 30 turnovers, turning those miscues into 48 points on the other end.
Senior
Devonna Smith chipped in 12 points and grabbed six rebounds and three steals, while senior
Jessica Zavoral dished out eight assists. The Tritons tallied 26 assists on 36 field goals.
Culver-Stockton shot 31.7 percent, including just 23.8 percent in the second half.
TRITON TIDBITS: UMSL is 6-1 for just the fifth time in program history… UMSL entered the game ranked second nationally in NCAA Division II, holding opponents to just 50.7 points per game, and limited an opponent to fewer than 40 points for the third time this season… the Tritons improve to 6-5 all-time against Culver-Stockton… UMSL is now 5-0 at home this season… UMSL shot a season-low 33.3 percent (6-of-18) at the free throw line… the Tritons entered the game ranked third in NCAA Division II at 81.3 percent from the line.
