ST. LOUIS, MO. – A late 12-2 run by host Maryville helped propel the Saints to a 69-61 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The Tritons end the regular season with a 15-11 record, including a 10-8 mark in the GLVC. UMSL will be the No. 9 seed in the GLVC Tournament and will travel to No. 8 seed Missouri S&T on Sunday in a first round game at 1 p.m.
Maryville, which earned the West Division title outright with the win, improves to 17-9 overall, including 13-5 in the league.
UMSL used a 16-5 run to open the second half to erase a 33-27 halftime deficit and take a 43-38 lead with 13:23 to play. A Shelby Miller three-pointer and a Kate Childs bucket then tied the score at 43-43.
After sophomore
Kelly McGovern gave the Tritons their final lead of the game at 54-53 with 4:52 to play, the Saints reeled off eight straight to ignite a 12-2 run and took a 65-56 lead en route to the win.
UMSL was led by junior
Hazaria Washington's 16 points and 12 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season, while senior
Devonna Smith tallied her ninth double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tritons shot 43.1 percent to Maryville's 45.5 percent and owned a 40-29 rebounding edge, including a 14-7 advantage on the offensive end, which resulted in UMSL outscoring Maryville, 20-4, in second chance points.
However, UMSL turned the ball over 15 times, while the Saints took advantage of the miscues, holding a 14-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Six unanswered points by Maryville put the Saints up 12-7 six minutes into the game. Sophomore
Tierra Snow followed with two straight buckets as UMSL pulled within one at 12-11 before Maryville used an 8-2 run to extend the lead to 20-13 with 8:36 to play.
Freshman
Kelly Kunkel's layup on a fastbreak then started an 8-2 UMSL run as the Tritons pulled within 22-21 on an offensive put back by freshman
Jazmine Smith with 3:39 on the clock.
Maryville's Brittnye McSparron scored the Saints' next nine points to spark her team to a 33-27 halftime lead. McSparron scored a game-high 20 points.
