Renaud Breaks Single Season Saves Record as Baseball Wins Two Over Prairie Stars

ST. LOUIS, MO., April 28, 2013 – Senior Kyle Renaud recorded two saves as the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team ran its win streak to nine by taking both games from visiting Illinois-Springfield on Sunday as the two teams opened up a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series. The Tritons were 2-0 winners each game.
 
Renaud, who entered the weekend ranking sixth nationally in all of NCAA Division II in saves, broke the single season school record in that category by posting his 12th of the season in the nightcap, breaking the previous mark of 11 set Greg Shepherd during the 1993 season. He also picked up career save number 13, moving him into a tie for third place on the career charts.
 
UMSL improved to 23-15 with the wins, including 19-9 in the GLVC, while Illinois-Springfield slips to 10-26 overall and 7-22 in the league.
 
The two teams will close out their four-game series tomorrow with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
 
GAME 1 – UMSL 2, Illinois-Springfield 0 (9 inning game)
Junior Zach Standefer picked up the win on the mound, tossing seven and two-thirds of an inning, scattering five hits, while striking out six.
 
Renaud tossed the other one and one-third of an inning, allowing just one hit.
 
Offensively, the Tritons tallied eight hits. UMSL broke a scoreless game in the sixth inning as senior Lucas Matecki scored on a Joe Wieczkowski single after leading off with a triple.
 
Wieczkowski then scored an insurance run in the eighth inning on a Cody Garlington RBI single.
 
GAME 2 – UMSL 2, Illinois-Springfield 0 (7 inning game)
Junior Nolan Clayton tossed six scoreless innings, scattering just three hits to get the win, while junior Tyler Bunge was 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored.
 
Junior Justin Lois singled up the middle in the second inning to score junior Michael Budka, who reached on an error, while Bunge scored on a Budka single in the fifth inning.
 
Renaud retired the side in the top of the seventh for his record save.
