Baseball Avoids GLVC Tournament Elimination With 4-2 Win Over Quincy

EVANSVILLE, IND. - After a first round upset, the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team bounced back and avoided elimination with 4-2 victory over Quincy on Thursday night at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament.
 
The No. 3 seeded Tritons dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 6 seed Bellarmine in the morning and are now being forced to make their way back through the loser's bracket. With the win, UMSL advances to play the loser of Bellarmine and No. 2 seed Lewis tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in another elimination game.
 
UMSL 4, Quincy 1
The Tritons, which moved to 28-18 on the season, took advantage of two Quincy errors in the fourth inning to break a scoreless game. Seniors Charlie Mohr and Lucas Matecki both reached on Hawks errors to lead off the inning. Mohr later scored on a Paul Richmond single, while Matecki came home on a Drew Standefer sac fly.
 
A Mohr groundout in the fifth inning allowed senior John Pilackas to score, making it 3-0, while junior Justin Lois brought Standefer home in the sixth with an RBI single through the left side.
 
The Tritons then had to fend off a late Quincy rally as the Hawks plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth on four of their 10 hits.
 
Senior Andy Flett garnered the win in eight and two-thirds of an inning before handing the ball to senior Kyle Renaud with two outs and runners on second and third. Renaud got Larry Sartin to ground out for the final out of the game and picked up his 16th save of the season. He also recorded his 17th career save, one shy of tying the school record.
 
UMSL recorded nine hits, including two each from Richmond and junior Michael Budka.
 
Bellarmine 5, UMSL 2
UMSL was plagued by three errors, which led to three unearned runs en route to the loss.
 
The Knights scored two runs in the first inning off UMSL starter Zach Standefer, before the Tritons tied it up in the second. Junior Tyler Bunge brought senior Charlie Mohr home in the bottom of the first to get one run back, while junior Justin Lois' double play groundout in the second allowed junior Michael Budka to scamper home and make it 2-2.
 
Two UMSL errors in the fifth allowed two Bellarmine runs to score, before the Knights came home on a passed ball in the sixth inning for the final score.
 
Standefer took the loss, allowing four runs, including two earned, on seven hits in four and two-thirds of an inning, while striking out five.
 
Bellarmine totaled 11 hits, while a Knights pitching staff of four held the Tritons to just three hits and recorded 12 strikeouts. Bunge finished with two of those hits.
