SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team rallied from a 19-points first half deficit, but came up short at No. 9 Drury on Thursday night in a 74-71 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss.
The Tritons used a 19-7 run to open the second half and took their only lead of the game at 50-48 on a shot from senior
Alyssa Like with 13:25 to play. But the Panthers responded with nine unanswered to ignite an 11-2 run to take a 61-52 at the 8:31 mark. Drury's 6-7 center Amber Dvorak scored nine points during that r and finished with a game-high 25 points. She had a string of 13 straight for the Panthers after UMSL's lead and scored 17 of Drury's final 26 points.
UMSL would pull within four points on three different occasions, including 68-64 on a layup by senior
Devonna Smith with 1:42 to play, but Drury maintained its lead by going 6-of-8 at the free throw line. A three-pointer from freshman
Sydney Bloch at the buzzer accounted for the final score.
The Tritons slip to 11-5 overall, including 4-4 in the GLVC, while Drury improves to 15-1 and 7-1 in the league.
Like finished with 17 points for UMSL, while junior
Kelly McGovern chipped in 14 points. Junior
Tierra Snow finished one shy of her career-high with 10 points off the bench, netting 5-of-7 field goals.
UMSL shot 45 percent from the field, including 51.6 percent in the second half and owned a 39-35 rebounding advantage with seniors
Devonna Smith and
Hazaria Washington grabbing 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Drury connected at a 45.5 percent clip from the field. The Panthers jumped out to an early 19-5 lead seven and a half minutes into the game and took their largest lead at 28-9 with 7:34 to play. UMSL closed out the opening stanza by outscoring the hosts, 22-13, to pull within 41-31 at the break.
The Tritons conclude a two-game road swing at Missouri S&T on Saturday at 1 p.m.
