ST. LOUIS, MO. – After an early back-and-forth game, visiting Southern Indiana scored four unanswered runs over three late innings to post a 7-4 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series.
The Tritons, which split the series with the Screaming Eagles, fall to 11-2 overall, including 6-2 in the GLVC. USI improves to 5-9 and 2-6 in the league.
Southern Indiana scored an unearned run in the first inning, but UMSL rallied back with two runs, including one in the second inning on
Dominic Orlando's two-out double and one in the third on junior
Jarret Clark's RBI on a USI one-out error, while senior
JJ Kinnevan was coming home.
The Screaming Eagles were then the benefactors of two Triton errors in the fourth, scoring twice for the 3-2 lead.
UMSL claimed its final lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth as freshman
Kyle Boewe, playing in his first collegiate game, delivered an RBI single before Kinnevan drove in another run with his double.
Southern Indiana took a 5-4 lead it would not relinquish in the sixth and added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth.
UMSL threatened in the ninth as pinch hitter
Jake Beckwith recorded a two-out single, followed by Orlando's infield single. However, USI closer Matt Chavarria, who led the nation in saves a year ago, got pinch hitter
John Michael Weaver to strike out and end the game.
The Tritons, which registered 10 hits and drew five walks and were hit by the pitch twice, left 14 runners on base. Kinnevan, Clark and Orlando had two hits each.
Southern Indiana finished with nine hits, including six off starter
A.J. McElderry, who was tagged with the loss in six innings. He allowed five runs, while walking three and striking out two.
UMSL returns to action next Saturday and Sunday with four games at Missouri S&T.
