ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team scored three runs on two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to post a 6-5 victory over No. 29 ranked William Jewell on Sunday afternoon.
The Tritons earn the Great Lakes Valley Conference series win by taking three of the four contests over the weekend and improve to 18-9 overall, including 13-9 in the league, while William Jewell slips to 24-9 and 15-7 in the GLVC.
UMSL scored just one earned run on the day, taking advantage of three Cardinal errors, including a dropped foul ball at the start of the bottom of the eighth inning that allowed sophomore
Jake Beckwith to lead off with a walk. Beckwith later came around to score on senior
Dylan Fieth's pinch hit RBI single to shortstop with junior
Dominic Orlando also coming across the plate on the Cardinals' wild throw. Freshman
Kyle Boewe pinch ran for Fieth, stole second and came with the winning run on senior
Daniel Seddon's RBI single through the left side.
Closer
Austin Simokaitis retired three straight in the ninth to pick up his 10
th save of the season, while the win went to reliever
Jon Shanker, who tossed two innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits.
UMSL outhit William Jewell, 10-8, and was led by senior
Shane Brinker, who finished 3-of-4 at the plate. Seddon finished 2-of-4.
After a two-run home run by the Cardinals in the first inning, UMSL got on the board in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a William Jewell throwing error. Brinker's RBI single in the sixth closed the gap to 3-2, while a
Justin Busekrus RBI ground out in the seventh made it 4-3.
Another William Jewell home run in the top of the eighth gave the visitors a 5-3 lead before the Tritons rallied.
Senior
A.J. McElderry went six innings in the start. He allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking three.
UMSL returns to action Tuesday, hosting Maryville in a pair of GLVC contests.
