KANSAS CITY, MO. – Junior
Dominic Orlando's two-out RBI double in the top of the seventh helped the University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team to a 6-5 win at Rockhurst in the second of two games Friday as the teams opened a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series. The host Hawks won the opener 3-1.
UMSL moves to 20-11 overall, including 15-11 in GLVC play, while Rockhurst is now 18-23 and 10-16 in league play. The series concludes with a doubleheader tomorrow.
GAME 1: Rockhurst 3, UMSL 1The Tritons were limited to just three hits, two of which were doubles by sophomores
Kevin Smith and
Jake Beckwith, while Rockhurst recorded eight hits and scored three unanswered runs to rally for the win.
UMSL plated its run in the third inning as Smith led off with a double, was sacrificed to third and then scored on senior
Daniel Seddon's RBI fielder's choice.
Rockhurst tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth, while a two-out two-run double in the seventh gave the Hawks the win.
Senior
Zach Sedlacek suffered his first loss on the mound this season, allowing all three runs on seven hits in six and two-thirds of an inning. He also struck out three and walked three.
GAME 2: UMSL 6, Rockhurst 5Orlando's game-winner came after Smith tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single. He then scored the winning run on Orlando's hit.
Orlando finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs, while Smith was one of four players with two hits. Beckwith also tallied two hits and drove in two runs with a triple in the fifth inning that made it a 2-2 game.
After Rockhurst regained a two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth, Orlando tied it at 4-4 in the sixth with his first two-run double of the game, but the Hawks crossed the plate once in the bottom of the frame for the 5-4 advantage.
Junior
Austin Simokaitis garnered the win in two innings of relief work, allowing one run on two hits. Senior
A.J. McElderry started on the mound, scattering eight hits and allowing four runs, including two earned.
