CARMEL, IND. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's golf team has advanced to match play of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships for the third straight year after finishing in third place in stroke play, which concluded on Tuesday afternoon.
The Tritons posted a 54-hole team score of 913, carding rounds of 296, 304 and 313, finishing 16 strokes behind first place Lewis (289-308-300 – 897) in the 14-team field. UMSL will face Indianapolis in tomorrow's semifinal, while Lewis will meet Illinois Springfield in the other semifinal. UIndy finished second in stroke play (294-306-300 – 900), while UIS was fourth (293-322-308 – 923).
The winners of the two semifinals will meet in the afternoon to play for the GLVC team title. The Tritons are seeking their first-ever GLVC Championship. UMSL won MIAA team championships in 1992 and 1993 and finished second to Indianapolis last season in match play.
Sophomore
Julien de Poyen led the Tritons individually with at third place finish, earning All-GLVC honors for his top five finish. The second half of the 10-member squad along with the major postseason awards, including Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year will be determined by a coaches' vote in the coming weeks. de Poyen turned in a score of 224 behind rounds of 72, 73 and 79.
Also for UMSL, sophomore
Matt Barry tied for seventh place with a 227 (73-76-78), while freshman
Markus Lindberg tied for 14
th place with a 230 (75-77-78). Juniors
Colby Yates (76-79-78 – 233; T23rd) and
Anthony Cope (78-78-80 – 236; T30th) rounded out the scoring.
Lewis' Alex Thode was crowned GLVC medalist for his two-under par 214 (71-72-71), finishing nine strokes better than runner-up Talon Supek of Illinois Springfield (68-79-76 – 223).
