Baseball Wins Nightcap in Split With Truman

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team recorded a 1-0 victory in the nightcap to split with visiting Truman State on Sunday in the start of a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series.

The Tritons move to 22-12 overall, including 16-12 in the GLVC, while Truman is now 27-15 and 19-11 in the league. The series concludes tomorrow with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.

GAME 1: Truman State 4, UMSL 0
All four Bulldog runs came in a four-hit fourth inning.

Senior Zach Sedlacek took the loss, working five and one-thirds of an inning. He allowed four runs on five hits and struck out four, while also issuing four walks.

Both teams finished with seven hits with sophomore Kevin Smith accounting for two of the Tritons'.

UMSL's bullpen of senior Alex Piontek and sophomores Andrew Bicklein and Jon Shanker combined for three and one-thirds scoreless innings after Sedlacek exited, scattering just two hits.

GAME 2: UMSL 1, Truman State 0
Senior A.J. McElderry struck out a season-high 10 in the win, while junior Austin Simokaitis recorded the one-inning save, his 11th of the season to tie the second most in UMSL's single season history.

Junior Cody Spotanski delivered the game-winning hit in the fifth inning with a single that scored Smith from second base. Smith reached on an infield hit and advanced to second on senior Shane Brinker's single. Head coach Jim Brady then waved him home on Spotanski's hit, sliding into home as the Truman State catcher failed to hold on to the ball.

The Tritons recorded three of their four hits in the fifth inning.

Spotanski also came up big defensively in the top of the seventh, throwing out pinch runner Tyler Hill, who was trying to steal second with one out.
