SETTING THE SCENE
UMSL heads north for a pair of GLVC road contests, while looking to snap a two-game losing streak. The Tritons will face a pair of East Division conference unbeatens in Lewis on Thursday and Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
UMSL went 0-2 last weekend in its GLVC home openers. The Tritons saw Indianapolis rally for a 64-57 win after ending the game on a 14-4 run, while Saint Joseph's topped UMSL, 84-81, in overtime after the Tritons forced the extra time.
SIZING UP THE TRITONS
The Tritons are 8-7 overall, including 2-3 in the GLVC, where they sit in fourth place in the West Division standings... UMSL is 4-3 on the road, including 2-1 in GLVC road games... the Tritons rank last in the GLVC in scoring offense (69.3 ppg), but are third in scoring defense (69.3 ppg)... 10 different players have started at least one game, while eight different players have been the top scorer.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Junior
Steven Davis and senior
Hunter Reine are the only two players averaging double figures. Davis averages 10.8 points per game with 80 percent of his scoring coming from beyond the three-point line on a team-best 43 three-pointers. He has made at least one three-pointer in all but one games and has six games of four or more long balls.
Reine averages 10.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game and is shooting 59.1 percent from the field. He ranks fifth in the league in rebounding and 12th in field goal shooting. Reine, who also has five double-doubles, has upped his scoring and rebounding production numbers from last season when he averaged 7.9 points and 4.8 rebounds.
Junior
D.J. White follows with 9.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and is coming off his third double-double of the year with 16 points and 15 rebounds against Saint Joseph's.
FRESHMAN ORIENTATION
Freshman guard
Kobe Wands is the lone freshman on the squad, but averages 18.5 minutes per gam and made his first collegiate start last Saturday against Saint Joseph's. He is averaging 7.5 points per game and is second on the team with 29 three-pointers, shooting 46.8 percent from long range, 14th in the league.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Lewis is 9-5 overall, but one of four teams undefeated in GLVC play in the East Division at 4-0. The Flyers, 5-2 at home, rank third in the league in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 40.9 percent shooting.
Wisconsin-Parkside, receiving votes in the NABC DII Top 25 Poll, enters a Thursday game against Maryville with a 12-1 overall record, having won 12 straight, and is 4-0 in the league. The Rangers owns a scoring margin of 14.6 and rank third in the conference shooting 52.4 percent, including a league-best 45.3 percent from three-point range.
THE SERIES
UMSL is 7-20 all-time against Lewis and lost a heartbreaking 71-68 decision last year in St. Louis as the Flyers made a buzzer-beating three-quarters court shot for the win.
UW-Parkside leads the all-time series, 19-14, and has won three straight, including a 70-66 decision in St. Louis a year ago.
