Men's Basketball Opens Homestand With Pair of Nationally Ranked Opponents

SETTING THE SCENE
UMSL begins a five-game homestand to close out the regular season this weekend, hosting No. 15 ranked Southern Indiana on Thursday and No. 7 ranked Bellarmine on Saturday.  

LAST TIME OUT
The Tritons are coming off a 79-69 loss at McKendree last Saturday, which came following a 66-65 win at Illinois Springfield last Thursday. Junior Elijah Watson converted a game-winning traditional three-point play with 1.7 seconds remaining to give the Tritons a 66-65 win at Illinois Springfield last Thursday before finishing with 33 points. The Tritons then suffered a 79-69 loss at McKendree on Saturday. The Tritons pulled within four in the final minute after trailing by 15. Junior Steven Davis scored a team-best 19 points, making five three-pointers

SIZING UP THE TRITONS
The Tritons are 10-13 overall, including 4-9 in the GLVC, where they sit in fifth place in the West Division standings... UMSL is in 10th place overall in the standings and is looking to stay in the top 12 to earn a spot in the GLVC Tournament... the Tritons are 5-5 at home, including 1-3 in the GLVC... 12 different players have started at least one game, while nine different players have been the top scorer.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Senior Hunter Reine and junior Steven Davis have been the top two scorers all season, each averaging 11.1 points per game.  

Reine also averages a team-best 8.5 rebounds and is shooting 61 percent from the field. He has six double-doubles and has pulled down double digit rebounds eight times, including in three of the last five games.

81 percent of Davis' scoring comes from beyond the three-point line on a team-best 69 three-pointers, which ties the sixth most in an UMSL single season. He has made at least one three-pointer in all but three games and has nine games of four or more long balls, including two games of eight three-pointers (at Webster and vs. Truman State), one shy of the program single game record. Davis is shooting 44.8 percent from long range, which ranks 12th in the GLVC. He is fourth with 3.00 three-pointers per game.

Junior Elijah Watson adds 10.3 points and 3.3 assists per game. He has scored in double figures in four of the last five games, including a season-best 33 at Illinois Springfield last Thursday.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
No. 15 ranked Southern Indiana is 21-2 overall, including 11-2 in the GLVC, where they sit in second place in the East Division. The Screaming Eagles are 5-1 on the road and lead the league in scoring offence in conference-only games with 88.6 points per game. They also average 10.2 three-pointers per game and lead the GLVC with a rebounding margin of +9.4.

No. 7 ranked Bellarmine enters a Thursday game at Maryville at 20-3 overall, including 12-1 in the league, sitting atop the East Division. The Knights have won seven straight and are 8-2 on the road. They own a GLVC-best scoring defense of 67.0 points per game in league-only contests and are shooting a conference-high 54 percent from the field, including 43.3 percent from three-point range.

THE SERIES
UMSL is 11-35 all-time against Southern Indiana and has lost 13 straight to the Screaming Eagles.

The Tritons are 11-20 all-time against Bellarmine with the Knights having won the last three meetings.
