Box Score O'FALLON, ILL. - The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth to rally back for a 10-8 win over Harris Stowe in its season opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Tritons had just one hit in that frame, but took advantage of three lead off walks before senior
Cooper Vinz was hit by a pitch to score one run. Another walk led to another run, before a sac fly by senior
Jacob Monti scored the go ahead run and a a wild pitch made for the final score.
Both teams recorded 11 hits with redshirt sophomore
Derrick Freeman tallying two of those, while driving in three runs. Junior
Tom DeCero added two hits and two RBIs.
Both teams got on the board in the fourth inning with UMSL's run coming on DeCero's lead off home run.
After a three-run fifth by the Hornets gave the home team a 4-1 lead, the Tritons countered with four in the sixth, which included a bases clearing triple from Freeman. Harris Stowe struck for two in the bottom of the frame, however, and after UMSL scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh, they took an 8-6 lead with two runs in the bottom of that inning.
Junior
Ben Leuthauser earned the win in relief, while junior
Matt Graser picked up the save. Senior
Kevin Smith went two scoreless innings in the start.
UMSL and Harris Stowe will meet again on Sunday for a doubleheader set for a Noon first pitch.
