PREVIEW: Men's Basketball Opens GLVC Tournament Play Thursday Night

SETTING THE SCENE
The UMSL men's basketball team tips off postseason play in the 2019 GLVC Tournament on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center on the campus of SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill. The sixth-seeded Tritons will meet the No. 3 seed Southern Indiana in the last of four quarterfinal round games.
 
The winner of that game will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against No. 2 seed Bellarmine vs. No. 7 seed Rockhurst. The other half of the bracket included No. 1 Lewis vs. No. 8 Truman State and No. 4 Indianapolis vs. No. 5 Drury. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
 
UMSL IN THE GLVC TOURNAMENT
  • The Tritons are back in the GLVC Tournament after missing a berth to the league's annual postseason affair last season.
  • UMSL is 3-12 all-time in GLVC Tournament games.
  • The Tritons lost a 76-63 decision at Indianapolis in first round action of the 2017 GLVC Tournament.
  • UMSL and Southern Indiana have only met one other time in the GLVC Tournament with the Screaming Eagles posting a 93-63 win in 2005.
 
UMSL VS. USI
UMSL is 38-11 all-time against Southern Indiana… the Tritons snapped a 15-game losing streak to the Screaming Eagles with a 73-61 win in St. Louis on January 5 during their regular season matchup. UMSL had four players in double figures, led by redshirt junior Jason Towery's 16, and shot 50 percent, while limiting USI to 34.5 percent from the field.
 
UMSL VS. THE REST OF THE FIELD
The Tritons are 2-5 against the rest of the field, having defeated Rockhurst (75-59) at home and Truman State (61-58) on the road. UMSL lost at home to then No. 1 Bellarmine (66-53), at Lewis (63-49) and Indianapolis (73-62), while Drury won both games (84-68 in Springfield and 73-62 in St. Louis).
 
SIZING UP THE TRITONS
  • UMSL is 20-8 overall, marking the program's first 20-win season since 1990-91.
  • The Tritons finished the GLVC schedule with an 11-7 record, the second most wins by UMSL in a GLVC season.
  • UMSL was 13-4 at home, 5-4 on the road and 2-0 on neutral court games.
  • Since its win over Southern Indiana, UMSL has gone 9-5, while since its loss to the Tritons, USI has gone 12-3.
 
ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANA
Southern Indiana is 21-7 overall and finished GLVC play with a 13-5 record. The Screaming Eagles, winners of three straight, were 10-4 at home, 7-2 on the road and 4-1 on a neutral court.
