PREVIEW: Men's Basketball Faces Drury in GLVC Tourney Opener as Top Seed

SETTING THE SCENE
UMSL begins GLVC Tournament play on Thursday night as the league's top seed for the first time in program history. The Tritons will face No. 8 seed Drury in one of four quarterfinal round games at 6 p.m. The winner advances to Saturday night's semifinal at 6 p.m. against the winner of No. 4 Southern Indiana/No. 5 Bellarmine. The championship game will be played on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

UMSL defeated Drury, 72-70, in Springfield, Mo., on Jan. 9 during the regular season, which snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Panthers. The Tritons held a 41-40 halftime lead but saw Drury take the game's largest lead at 56-48 with 11:32 to go before UMSL rallied back.

GLVC REGULAR SEASON CO-CHAMPIONS
The Tritons clinched a share of the GLVC regular season title after finishing the league slate with a 16-4 record, sharing the crown with Truman State. UMSL had last won a regular season conference title in 2012 when they won the GLVC West Division, back when the league was divided into two divisions.

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS
At 25-5 overall, UMSL has recorded the most wins in program history, surpassing the 22 victories of the 1987-88 and 1990-91 teams.

ON THE NATIONAL SCENE
  • UMSL is nationally ranked in the NABC Coaches DII Poll for the eighth straight week, coming in at No. 16 this week - two spots higher than last week.
  • The Tritons were ranked as high as No. 13 earlier this season, a program-high.
  • Prior to this season, UMSL's last national ranking came during the 1990-91 season.

UMSL IN THE GLVC TOURNAMENT
  • UMSL is 3-13 all-time in GLVC Tournament games.
  • The Tritons lost an 87-61 decision last year as the No. 6 seed to No. 3 seed Southern Indiana.
  • UMSL's last GLVC Tournament win came during the 2014-15 season when they defeated William Jewell, 80-68, in the first round before falling to Drury, 70-65, in the quarterfinals.
  • The Tritons have played in just one semifinal game, falling to Northern Kentucky, 72-70, during the 2011-12 season.

SIZING UP THE TRITONS
  • Juniors Yaakema Rose Jr. (14.1 ppg) and Jose Grubbs (13.5 ppg) have been atop the scoring leaders all season.
  • Seniors Jason Towery (10.7 ppg) and Jalen Wilkins-McCoy (10.2 ppg) also average double figures.  
  • Redshirt sophomore Steve Webb leads the team in rebounds (5.8 rpg) and assists (3.6 apg).
  • UMSL ranks third in NCAA DII in scoring defense (62.1 ppg) and 22nd in steals per game (8.7).
  • Their 262 total steals is the 13th most in NCAA DII and ranks third on the program's single season charts.
  • Rose Jr. has 59 of those steals, which leads the GLVC and is 31st in NCAA DII. His individual total is also third on the program's single season charts.

ABOUT DRURY
  • Drury finished the regular season with a 20-8 overall record, including a 13-7 GLVC mark, and have won eight of its last nine.
  • The Panthers were second in GLVC-only games with a scoring average of 77.5 points per game and dished out a league-best 17.7 assists per game.

UMSL-DRURY SERIES
  • Drury leads the all-time series 25-8. .
  • UMSL has played more overtime games against Drury than any other program. The Tritons are 1-5 all-time in those games.
  • UMSL is 1-1 vs. Drury in GLVC Tournament games, with both contests coming during the quartefinals. They lost a 70-65 overtime decision in 2015 and won a 71-60 decision in 2012.

HEAD COACH BOB SUNDVOLD
Bob Sundvold is in his seventh season as head coach at UMSL, where he is 117-84 (.582). A veteran coach with more than 30 years experience as both a head coach and an assistant coach, Sundvold owns a career record of 241-192 (.556).
