ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's tennis team competed at the Southwest Baptist Invitational this past weekend. The Tritons saw freshmen
Gavin Sohn,
AJ Burrows and
Pascal Maclean-Wood advance to the consolation semifinals in the B Singles Draw.
Sohn dropped his first-round match to Harding's Bryce Walker in three sets by scores of 3-5, 4-1, 4-10 in a third set tiebreak. He bounced back in the consolation quarterfinals defeating Southwest Baptist's Alex Crawford 8-3.
Burrows fell to Cas de Ruiter of Harding in his first-round match 1-4, 4-5 (3-7) but then defeated SBU's Bryson Crowell 8-2 in the consolation quarters.
Maclean-Wood was beaten in straight sets by McKendree's Charlie Sanzo 3-5, 2-4 before defeating Harding's George Hansard 8-3.
Jose Mayorga went 1-1 in the A Singles draw losing to McKendree's David Leon 4-1, 4-0 but defeated Harding's Milosh Petrovic who had to retire.
Raphael Kerndl and
Juan Vigil each went 0-2 in the A Singles Draw. Kerndl fell to Harding's Teodor Zlatar 4-1, 4-1 and lost to SBU's IIyes Khelifi 8-2 in the consolation quarterfinals. Vigil won the first set of his match against McKendree's Jordi Leston 4-2 but Leston rallied to win the next two sets by scores of 4-1 and 10-6.
The doubles team of Maclean-Wood and Sohn went 1-1 in the B Doubles Draw. They defeated Harding's Hansard and Lukas Rambo 8-5 but fell to Harding's duo of Jaydon van Vreden and Ricard Jove 8-0 in the semifinals.
UMSL returns to the courts on Sunday (Sept. 25) as it travels to Fulton, Mo., to take on William Woods at 12 p.m.
