Maddi Moon Steps Down as University of Missouri-St. Louis Head Women’s Soccer Coach

Moon is leaving for the University of Iowa after five years at helm of program

ST. LOUIS – Maddi Moon, who led the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's soccer program to its first Great Lakes Valley Conference title in program history is stepping down as the head coach of the Tritons to take an assistant coaching position at the University of Iowa.

Over her five-season tenure as head coach at UMSL, Moon built a consistently competitive program, leading the Tritons to a 41-30-18 overall record, including a strong 30-22-14 mark in GLVC play. In the last four seasons, she guided UMSL to four straight GLVC Tournament appearances, reaching the semifinals twice and capping it off with a championship-winning run in 2024.

"UMSL will always hold a special place in my heart," Moon said. "I am incredibly proud of what we built, from the culture and resilience to making history with our first GLVC championship. Seeing my first recruiting class win a title and leave a legacy is something I will always cherish. More than anything, I will miss the players, staff, and relationships that made this journey so special.

"I am so grateful to Lori Flanagan for giving me the opportunity to lead this program and to Holly Sheilley for her incredible leadership and support. While it is hard to leave, I am very excited for the next chapter at Iowa and look forward to bringing the same passion and commitment to the Hawkeyes."

"Coach Moon has been instrumental in building a strong foundation for our program, and we are incredibly grateful for her contributions," UMSL Executive Director of Athletics Dr. Holly Sheilley said. While we will miss her leadership, I'm fully committed to finding a new leader who will continue the positive trajectory she established and help guide our team to even greater success."

The Tritons won their first GLVC title in women's soccer this past fall that saw them finish the season going 10-1-1 in their final 12 games. They had an 11-game unbeaten streak and a nine-game winning streak in that run which culminated with a 1-0 win over McKendree in the GLVC title contest that secured an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. UMSL lost in the first round to third seeded Grand Valley State who advanced to the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

During their 11-game unbeaten streak the Triton defense was stingy allowing a total of three goals while its offense found the back of the net 25 times.

She had eight players receive All-GLVC accolades and one earned All-Region honors.

In her last three seasons, UMSL was 28-17-11 under Moon's direction and advanced to at least the semifinal round of the conference tournament in 2022 and 2024.

The Tritons have been of the stingiest defensive teams in the NCAA Division II over the last two years, allowing less than a goal per game (30 goals in 38 games) during that time. UMSL ranked 35th in shutout percentage at 52.4 percent and 42nd in goals against average at 0.754.

The 14 wins in 2024 were the most in a season since 1982 when the Tritons finished the year with a record of 15-2-2.

Moon will be joining a program at Iowa that finished the 2024 season at 15-3-4 including 8-2-1 in Big 10 play. The Hawkeyes advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament where they fell to Virginia Tech 1-0.
