ST. LOUIS – University of Missouri-St. Louis men's golf head coach
Troy Halterman was named the Golf Pride Grips Midwest Region Coach of the Year as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Tuesday afternoon.
Halterman, the Great Lakes Valley Conference men's and women's golf Coach of the Year, led the Tritons to their best finish in school history at the NCAA Championships finishing second in the stroke play portion of the tournament with a 54-hole total score of 837 (278-281-278) to earn the second seed in the medal/match play championship.
In its first match in medal/match play, UMSL defeated Cal State San Bernardino, seeded seventh, 4.5-to-0.5 to advance to the semifinal round for the first time in program history. The Tritons fell to Wingate, seeded third, 3.5-to-1.5 in the semifinals to finish in a tie for third overall.
Halterman guided UMSL to a second place finish at the NCAA Midwest/Central Regional to punch its ticket to the championship tournament and led the Tritons to their fourth GLVC title in program history with a 4-1 win over Missouri S&T in the medal/match play final.
As a team, UMSL won one event and had nine top five finishes including five second place finishes.
