ST. LOUIS, MO. – Senior
Thomas Mihalczo scored the game's only goal in overtime, helping the No. 6 seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at No. 3 seed Drury on Sunday afternoon in quarterfinal round action of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Mihalczo's goal came seven minutes and 27 seconds into the first OT on a shot 14 yards out on the left side. It was his third goal of the season.
With the win, UMSL improves to 11-6-2, equaling the program's most wins since the 1998 team finished 11-7-2. The Tritons also advance to the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 1999. UMSL will face No. 2 seed Quincy on Friday in Kansas City, Mo., at 5:00 p.m. Top-seeded Rockhurst will serve as host of the semifinals and finals. The other semifinal contest will feature the host Hawks against No. 5 seed Southern Indiana at 7:30 p.m.
Drury, ranked No. 17 nationally in NCAA Division II, ends its season at 12-4-2.
The Panthers finished the contest outshooting the Tritons, 11-9. Both teams placed three shots on goal. Senior keeper
Patrick Ream recorded three saves in goal, while moving into a tie for fourth place on the single season charts with eight shutouts.
TRITON TIDBITS: UMSL improves to 2-1-1 this season against ranked opponents… the Tritons are currently riding a six-game unbeaten streak… UMSL improves to 6-6-2 all-time against Drury, while picking up its first win in Springfield since 1996… Mihalczo's OT game-winner was his second of the season with the first coming in a 1-0 victory over then No. 5 ranked Rockhurst.
