OWENSBORO, KY. – A trio of freshmen combined for four goals as the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team handed Kentucky Wesleyan a 5-0 loss Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The Tritons, which out-shot the Panthers, 19-10, landed 12 shots on goal, while improving to 3-2 overall, including 2-1 in the GLVC. Kentucky Wesleyan slips to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Freshman Jared Swierk accounted for two goals, while freshmen
Chris Pearson and
Tyler Collico and sophomore
Dennis Bayens all notched one goal each.
Pearson scored for the second straight contest, scoring unassisted just 12:55 into the contest for the early 1-0 lead, while Swierk made it 2-0 in the 24th minute. Bayens scored in the 35th minute off a pass from junior
Matt Burrus, while Collico sent UMSL into halftime with a 4-0 lead scoring with 48 seconds on the clock.
Swierk's second goal came in the 70th minute off a pass from Collico.
The Tritons had 14 different plays take at least one shot with Collico taking a team-high three shot attempts, landing two on goal.
Senior
Patrick Ream played the first 45 minutes in goal, recording two saves, while freshman
Jeremiah Cooper played all 45 minutes of the second half, also notching two saves.
UMSL returns to action Friday, hosting Rockhurst at 7:30 p.m.
