Collico's Hat Trick Lifts Men's Soccer to Victory

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Freshman Tyler Collico scored three goals as the University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team posted a 4-1 victory over Lake Erie on Sunday afternoon at the Chaminade College Prepartory Soccer Field for the Tritons' first win of the season.

All four UMSL (1-1) tallies came in the second half and helped the Tritons overcome a slow start in which Lake Erie (1-1) scored just three minutes and 51 seconds into the game. The Storm's Anthony Novak fired a shot from the left wing that hit the crossbar before dropping down into the net to give his team the early edge which would stand through the first 45 minutes of play.

Collico scored his first collegiate goal in the 70th minute to tie the game when he flicked a pass from fellow freshman Clay Stocker behind his back and past the Storm's keeper.

The Tritons then took a lead they would not relinquish in the 72nd minute courtesy of an own goal as Lake Erie's Stewart Bath put the ball in the wrong net.

Collico added insurance goals in the 81st minute off a cross from junior Matt Burrus and in the 87th minute on a header off a cross from freshman Michael Schlemper.

Collico fired eight shots in the contest as the Tritons owned a 17-7 advantage in shots. UMSL took advantage of two Lake Erie ejections just a little over three minutes into the second half, owning an 8-3 edge in shots in the second half. A third Storm player was ejected with six minutes remaining.

UMSL had eight different players take a shot, including freshman Jared Swierk and sophomore Tony Auck, who fired two each.

Senior Patrick Ream played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tritons, recording four saves.

UMSL returns to action Friday, hosting Bellarmine at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.
