ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team shot a season-high 51.8 percent from the field while picking up a 65-50 win over McKendree on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
It was the second straight win for the Tritons, who improve to 7-6 overall, including 2-3 in the GLVC. McKendree, in its first year in the GLVC, slips to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Sophomore
Kelly McGovern recorded 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added five rebounds and five assists. Defensively, McGovern held McKendree's Caty Ponce, the conference's scoring leader (18.6 ppg) to just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting.
Senior
Angela Johnson followed with 13 points, three steals and three assists, while junior
Hazaria Washington finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
UMSL took a 34-21 lead into the intermission after outscoring the Bearcats 17-5 in the final 6:08 of the opening 20 minutes. The Tritons shot 57.7 percent from the field in the first half, while forcing McKendree into 15 turnovers and converted those miscues into 19 points on the other end.
The Bearcats shot 40 percent from the field and held a 33-31 rebounding edge, including a 15-12 advantage on the offensive end.
UMSL returns to the court on Thursday at Rockhurst. Game time is set for 5:15 p.m.
