ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team won its Great Lakes Valley Conference and home opener with a 3-2 victory over Lewis on Saturday afternoon, while the Flyers took the nightcap with a 1-0 win.
The Tritons move to 4-6 overall, including 1-1 in league play, while Lewis is 7-3 and 1-1 in the GLVC. The two teams were scheduled to close out a four-game series tomorrow with another doubleheader, but forecasted rain and snow has canceled those games.
UMSL will return to action next Saturday and Sunday, hosting Saint Joseph's in a four-game GLVC series.
GAME 1 – UMSL 3, Lewis 2 (nine inning game)
Senior
John Pilackas broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when an RBI single to center field that scored junior
Tyler Bunge, who led off the frame with a hit by pitch, for the game-winning run.
Both teams scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Senior
Lucas Matecki led off the fourth inning with a double to right field and later scored on an RBI groundout from senior
Trevor Nathanson. Matecki also played a role in the fifth inning run for the Tritons, driving in junior
Paul Richmond with an RBI single.
Matecki finished with two hits, while junior
Justin Lois also had two.
Junior
Nolan Clayton recorded the win on the mound, allowing two runs on two hits, while striking out six in seven innings.
Senior
Kyle Renaud picked up save number four on the season, retiring seven of the eight batters he faced in the final two innings.
GAME 2 – Lewis 1, UMSL 0 (seven inning game)
In a game that saw just five hits, including three from Lewis, the Flyers scored the game-winner in the third inning.
Lewis was charged with four errors, but UMSL was never able to take advantage, leaving seven runners stranded.
