EVANSVILLE, IND. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team opened the 2013 campaign with a pair of games Sunday afternoon at the Dunn Hospitality Tournament. The Tritons fell 11-2 to Ashland in the opener before a 3-2 loss to host Southern Indiana.
UMSL (0-2) returns to action this Thursday-Sunday when the Tritons travel to Florida for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. UMSL will face Wheeling Jesuit in a doubleheader on Thursday to begin the four-day event.
Ashland 11, UMSL 2
Ashland (1-0) recorded 14 hits to garner the win. The Eagles used a two-out three run homer in the first inning for an early lead before tacking on three runs in the third and five in the seventh.
UMSL, which tallied nine hits, got on the board in the top of the ninth with two runs. Senior

Andy Flett took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings.
Southern Indiana 3, UMSL 2
The Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior
Lucas Matecki scored on a Nathanson sacrifice fly. Matecki led off the game with a single before stealing second for his first stolen base of the season.
However, the Screaming Eagles (4-0) took the lead in the bottom half of the frame, scoring three times on two hits and one UMSL error.
The Tritons got one run back in the fifth inning when Matecki crossed the plate again, this time on a single by Nathanson.
Matecki recorded two of UMSL's seven hits.
Junior
Nolan Clayton took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits in seven and two-thirds of an inning. Clayton struck out seven and walked three.
