ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team lost a 69-60 verdict to No. 18 Quincy on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The Tritons suffer their third straight loss and slip to 11-4 overall, including 4-3 in the GLVC, while the Hawks improve to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the league.
Quincy outscored UMSL 17-4 over the final 7:49 of the first half to hold a 40-26 halftime advantage. The Tritons were just 2-of-8 from the field during that stretch with six turnovers.
Senior
Alyssa Like scored 12 of her game-high 17 points in the opening 20 minutes, netting all five field goal attempts, while the rest of the team was just 5-of-20 (25 percent). She scored UMSL's first seven points and netted a three-pointer at the 8:07 mark to pulled the Tritons within 23-22. However, Like wouldn't get another shot attempt until a jumper in the paint with five seconds on the clock before intermission.
The Tritons shot 39.3 percent from the field, while Quincy shot 46.4 percent and held a 36-35 rebounding edge. The Tritons snagged 18 offensive boards to the Hawks' 15, but both teams scored 13 second chance points.
After trailing by 15 early in the second half, UMSL pulled within eight points on three different occasions, including 51-43 on a lay in by junior
Tierra Snow with 6:48 to play. However, the Hawks followed that with a 12-6 run over the next three minutes, pushing the lead to 63-49.
Senior
Devonna Smith tallied her eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Like also finished with four assists and a pair of steals.
UMSL returns to action on Thursday when it will face its second straight nationally ranked opponent as the Tritons travel to No. 10 Drury. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
