ST. LOUIS – The University of Missouri-St. Louis men's soccer team concludes its season opening five-game road trip traveling across the river to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Leemon Field.
Last Time Out – The Tritons (2-0-2, 1-0-1 GLVC) opened conference play last weekend with a 2-0 win at William Jewell with goals from
Luca Saewe and
Bobby Boone while
Austin Reis made six saves for his fifth career shutout. UMSL played to a scoreless draw at Rockhurst last Sunday with Reis making four saves in the contest for back-to-back shutouts.
ICYMI – Reis was named the GLVC's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after making 10 saves and posting two shutouts in helping the Tritons go 1-0-1 to open league play. It's his second career Defensive Player of the Week honor.
D-Fense – UMSL is one of the top defensive teams in the GLVC through the first three weekends having given up just three goals in four contests. Lewis is the league's top defensive team having conceded only two goals in its first five games while McKendree is third with a goals against average of 0.67.
League Leaders – Reis ranks third in the GLVC in saves with 16 is fifth in goals against average at 0.75 and sixth in shutouts per game with 0.500. Saewe and
Melo Mensah are tied for sixth in game-winning goals with one apiece and
Devin Livingstone is 10th in shots with 2.25 per contest.
About McKendree – The Bearcats enter Sunday's contest with a record of 4-0-2, 2-0 GLVC and have won two in a row. Last weekend they defeated Rockhurst 1-0 in the GLVC opener for both teams then on Sunday rallied for a 2-1 win at William Jewell.
McKendree has scored nine goals on the season while conceding four. Rhys Davies and Chris Moore lead the team with two goals apiece while Davies has tacked on a pair of assists for a total of six points. Jay Sangha leads the team with two assists. Christian Herluf has played every minute in goal for the Bearcats and has made 13 saves with a save percentage of .765 and a goals against average of 0.67.
Series History – Sunday's contest marks the 15th meeting all-time between the Tritons and McKendree with the Bearcats holding an 8-5-1 advantage in the series. UMSL snapped McKendree's four-game winning streak in the series rallying for a 2-1 victory last season in the season finale. The two sides have split the last 10 meetings.
Up Next – The Tritons host 11th ranked Indianapolis in its home opener next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Don Dallas Field. It'll be a brief homestand as UMSL will take on Lewis (Oct. 1) at 2:30 p.m.
