UMSL Athletics Announces Discontinuation of Track and Field Programs

ST. LOUIS -- The University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL) and the UMSL Athletics Department announced on Tuesday (March 4) the discontinuation of the men's and women's track and field programs, effective at the end of the Spring 2025 semester. This decision was made following a comprehensive review of the university's athletic offerings and resource allocations.

"This was a difficult decision, but our priority remains providing our student-athletes with the best possible academic and athletic experience," Executive Director of Athletics Dr. Holly Sheilley said. "By streamlining our offerings, we can enhance support for our cross-country teams while uplifting our 15 total sport programs, ensuring they remain competitive and well-resourced."

UMSL Athletics is committed to supporting our student-athletes during this transition. The university will honor all athletic scholarships for students who were exclusively members of the track and field program through their remaining years of eligibility, provided they continue to meet academic progress requirements. Student-athletes who compete in both track and field and cross country will retain their scholarships if they remain part of the cross-country team and maintain academic eligibility.
