ST. LOUIS, MO. – The University of Missouri-St. Louis baseball team ran its win streak to 10 games with a 7-5 victory over Illinois-Springfield on Monday afternoon in the first of two Great Lakes Valley Conference contests. However, the streak was snapped as the Prairie Stars salvaged the split with a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
UMSL moves to 24-16, including 20-10 in the GLVC, while UIS is now 11-27 and 8-23.
The Tritons return to action on Wednesday when it hosts McKendree in a nonconference doubleheader at 1 p.m. to close out the home portion of its schedule.
GAME 1 – UMSL 7, UIS 5 (7 inning game)
After Illinois-Springfield plated an unearned run in the top of the first, the Tritons scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame, which included a two-run single from junior
Paul Richmond.
The Prairie Stars retook the lead in the top of the second, scoring four times on five hits and one UMSL error for the 5-4 advantage.
Senior
Lucas Matecki then delivered his first homerun of the season and the second of his career with one out in the bottom of the second to knot it at 5-5, while a
Drew Standefer sac fly in the third sent Richmond across the plate for a 6-5 lead.
A series of Prairie Stars errors in the bottom of the fifth inning allowed junior
Michael Budka to scamper home, pushing the Tritons advantage to 7-5. Budka reached with a double, his third hit of the game.
Senior
Andy Flett garnered the win on the mound, allowing five runs, including just two earned, on six hits. He also struck out seven and walked two.
Senior
Kyle Renaud picked up his 13
th save of year, pitching two innings in relief, scattering two hits.
Budka finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs, while Matecki was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Richmond went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. UMSL tallied eight hits as a team.
GAME 2 –UIS 6, UMSL 5 (9 inning game)
UMSL was plagued by five errors in the game, which led to five unearned runs by the Prairie Stars.
The Tritons scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, including two on a
Cody Garlington double to left center. Senior
John Pilackas added an RBI single, which trimmed UMSL's deficit to 4-3, but the Prairie Stars added another two runs in the top of the sixth.
Garlington then scored Matecki with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, while an RBI single from junior
Justin Lois in the bottom of the eighth made it 6-5.
UMSL had the winning run on base when the game ended. Garlington reached on a one-out walk and advanced to third when Standefer singled up the middle with two outs.
Senior
Brett Wolf suffered the loss, allowing five runs, including just one earned, on seven hits in five and one-thirds of an inning. Junior
Jonthan Rosario tossed the other three and two-thirds, allowing one unearned run on two hits, while striking out three.
Standefer paced the offense with three hits in four at-bats, while senior
Nolan Craig, Pilackas and Lois all added two hits each as the Tritons out-hit Illinois-Springfield, 10-9. UMSL left 11 runners on base.
